We all are aware of the ongoing tech tug-of-war between the two giants Microsoft and Google. There is stiff competition between the two biggies in many areas that include online conferencing, productivity platforms, cloud or search. Cloud identity management has also found its place in the competition and the both the tech titans are at a face-off in a scenario of Azure Active Directory vs Google Cloud Identity.

When google apps were announced, they had not challenged active directory, instead, they had built their app over it. It was witnessed that major section of the IT companies went ahead in adopting G suite, but the question still remained “Can Active Directory be replaced?”

The entire idea about Google Cloud Identity is focused on having an organization’s Google-based identities for G Suite joined with Google Cloud that is hosted with them. The matter of fact is that they are in no way meant to be used for systems that are, Azure, AWS cloud servers, Office 365 and also various other network access, on-prem applications and so on. Microsoft too has been active in promoting both Azure Active Directory and Office 365 platform.

Azure Active Directory is not a substitute to Active Directory, but rather a user management system for Office 365, Azure and web application SSO platform. In case the IT firms are on the lookout for a core directory service, they would not be able to spot it out either in Azure Active Directory or Google Cloud Identity.

Now, this could raise a vital point, which is, whether the comparison is made between Azure Active Directory and Google Cloud Identity is even valid at this given level. Instead, it should be envisaged in the manner where it would be considered that identity management platform is needed to act as any firm’s core, central and authoritative source when it comes to user authentication and identities.

Again, the point needs to be clarified that none of the platforms finish that task, instead their role is limited in being user management systems for their respective platforms.
